Why digital beats the punch card

The mechanic is identical. Everything around it changes.

1

It cannot be lost

The single biggest leak in paper loyalty is the card at the bottom of a bag. When a customer loses a card half-full, they usually do not start again — you lose the collected progress and the motivation with it. A wallet pass is always on the phone and always current.

2

You can reach them afterwards

A paper card cannot tell anyone about a quiet Tuesday. A digital stamp card can send a push to the lock screen — including the message that converts best of all: "one more visit and your next one is free."

3

It cannot be gamed

A borrowed rubber stamp costs you real margin. Stamps are added from your staff's scanner against a specific customer, so every stamp is attributable and reversible if someone makes a mistake.

4

You can finally see the programme

Paper tells you nothing. Digital shows you how many customers are halfway to a reward, who has gone quiet, and whether the goal you set is actually reachable — which is the number most programmes get wrong.

Launching a stamp card

About twenty minutes, and no developer.

  1. 1

    Set the goal

Choose how many stamps earn the reward. Aim for something a regular customer reaches in about a month — if they visit weekly, five or six, not twelve. A goal nobody reaches teaches customers to ignore the card.

  2. 2

Pick a reward that protects margin

Reward with an add-on, a retail item or an off-peak upgrade rather than the core product that occupies your busiest hour. A free coffee at 8am costs you a sale you already had.

  3. 3

Put the QR where they already stand still

At the till, on the counter, on the receipt. Enrolment happens in the twenty seconds while a customer waits for the card machine, and that is the window you are designing for.

  4. 4

    Stamp with one tap

Your staff open the scanner, scan the customer's pass, and the stamp lands instantly with the reward triggering automatically when the card fills.

Getting a stamp card right

Where stamp cards work, where they quietly cost you, and how to set the goal.

Stamps are the most intuitive loyalty mechanic there is — nobody needs it explained. That simplicity is exactly why it is the right choice for some businesses and the wrong one for others.

The deciding factor is not your sector, it is how much your transaction values vary.

When a stamp card is the right mechanic

Stamps work when purchases are frequent and similar in value. A coffee shop, a lunch spot, a car wash, a barber — places where almost every visit is worth roughly the same amount, and where a customer might come weekly.

In those businesses a stamp feels fair, because everyone is earning at the same rate. It is also the fastest mechanic to explain at a busy till, which matters more than it sounds: the programme your staff can describe in one sentence is the programme that actually gets offered.

When stamps quietly cost you money

If your basket sizes vary a lot, stamps punish your best customers. A stamp treats a small order and a large one identically, so the customer spending three times as much earns at the same rate — and they notice.

In that situation a points programme is the better fit, because it rewards value rather than visits. Retail, restaurants with a wide menu spread, salons selling both a trim and a full colour: all of them are usually better served by points, or by points with tiers on top.

Setting the goal, which is where most programmes fail

The classic mistake is copying the twelve-stamp card. If a customer visits every six weeks, twelve stamps is more than a year of loyalty before a single reward — the motivation is gone long before the card fills.

Work backwards from visit frequency instead: pick a goal a typical customer reaches in roughly a month. If almost nobody is redeeming after a month of running, the goal is too far away and you should shorten it rather than conclude that loyalty does not work for you.

Stamps are one of four. Here is where the others fit better.

Stamp card questions

  • No. The stamp card is added to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, which is already on the phone. Enrolment is a QR scan and a phone number or email at the counter.
